Too warm weather in Chukotka has led to the fact that 56 polar bears can not leave the vicinity of the village Ryrkaypiy, according to the world
wildlife Fund (WWF) of Russia.
The head of the program noted "
Bear patrol" in the town Tatiana Minenko. Almost all bears are thin, " among them; there are both adults and young animals, there are females with cubs of different ages."
Inspectors patrol the village, are on duty near the kindergarten and school to prevent the meeting of people and bears. All public events have been cancelled, the administration and volunteers are involved in resolving the situation.
As it is noted in the message, in the area of Cape Kozhevnikov unusually warm weather for the beginning of December was established. Because of this, the bears can not leave the vicinity of the village on the ice, which is not yet strong enough.
"If the ice had been strong enough, the bears, or at least some of them, would have gone to sea, where they could have hunted a seal or a sea hare. In the meantime, they would seek food along the shore. In villages bears, too, like go — watch, as people live, and in search of food. Therefore, the issue of waste management, especially with food, is acute. Situations like this are becoming the norm. So we need to adapt to this so that neither people nor bears suffer, " explained Mikhail Stishov, WWF Russia project coordinator for the conservation of Arctic biodiversity.
